The German Navy (Kriegsmarine) played a major role in the Second World War as control over the commerce routes in the Atlantic was crucial for Germany, Britain and later the Soviet Union.

In the Battle of the Atlantic, the initially successful German U-boat fleet arm was eventually defeated due to Allied technological innovations like sonar, radar, and the breaking of the Enigma code.

Large surface vessels were few in number due to construction limitations by international treaties prior to 1935. The "pocket battleships" Admiral Graf Spee and Admiral Scheer were important as commerce raiders only in the opening year of the war. No aircraft carrier was operational as German leadership lost interest in the German Navy's carrier, Graf Zeppelin, which had been launched in 1938.

Following the loss of the Bismarck in 1941, with Allied air superiority threatening the remaining battlecruisers in French Atlantic harbours, the ships were ordered to make the Channel Dash back to German ports. Operating from fjords of Norway, which had been occupied in 1940, convoys from the USA to the Soviet port of Murmansk could be intercepted even though the Tirpitz spent most of her career as Fleet in being.

Since the appointment of Karl Doenitz as Grand Admiral of the Kriegsmarine, Germany stopped constructing battleships and cruisers in favour of U-boats.

Is there a LOT of Kriegsmarine reenacting? No, not really, but there are some groups. If it interests you, why not give it a try? This hobby is one of doing and it is still also a HOBBY meaning we do it for fun and for what interests us. If the German Navy interests you, then by all means, why not put together an impression?

	KM COASTAL ARTILLERIE MAA-266 OF NEW ENGLAND (New England USA, Massachusetts) This Massachusetts based unit portrays Kriegsmarine Coastal Artillerie MAA-266. We also portray Allied units, specifically USMC and any other Forward Observer units
	MILITARY FORWARD OBSERVER OF NEW ENGLAND (New East USA) This unit primary goal is to reenact German coastal artillerie. On the Allied side we reenact USMC. Former military is welcome. We have all the additional gear to conduct a full size Marine Corps HQ. We also display from Span am to present Marine Corps. Visit our website and join up. 	KRIEGSMARINE! (USA)--an all new reenactment group based in NewEngland, Massachusetts. This new reenactment group will specialize in the reenactment of the German Kriegsmarine from 1939 to 1945 . Members will display many types of uniforms and act out there impressions during living history events and public parades and displays. We are currently in the planning stage and will soon design a unit impression, title, personnal impressions and personas. We are in the process of researching the history of every aspect of the Kriegsmarine. Our short term, and long term goals are to build a reenactment unit with members that are highly motivated in the study, and reenactment, of the Kriegsmarine. Our long term plan is to build a scaled down replica of a German E-boat or equivalent.

	Kriegsmarine Kustenabteilung (USA) -- Our goal with this organization must be to portray ourselves as closely as is practicable to the units that we are representing. In doing so, we will honor as well as respect those that participated in the actual events of the Second World War. Additionally, we shall honor and respect the other reenactors that will be participating in the Living History and Tactical events that are to come, as well as learn and educate ourselves to the greatest extent on the subject matter of the German Navy of the Second World War.
