SS Foreign volunteer shields
«
on:
September 13, 2007, 01:27:40 PM »
Been checking out some stuff of mine on the various volunteer units and am running into something that is making me wonder. Anyone know for sure which arm had the foreign volunteer shields? I've seen them on both arms and am beginning to wonder which is the right one. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Most I have seen have been on the right sleeve but this pics shows the Finns designating their helmets.

That's what I was thinking, but I have seen a few pics with them either just above the cuff title, or right below the sleave eagle. Think I am going to go ahead and stick with it being on the right sleeve. Thanks Antonescu. I hadn't seen the part about designating on the helmet before though. Anywho, if anyone else knows something about it, drop me a line or post it here.
Thanks again all,
Hank S.

That's Finnish troops in Finnish front, not Finns in German service.

Aargh, my mistake, sorry!
I have the unit of those soldiers written somewhere, will post it here should I find it.
The skull design was a "speciality" of one certain Jäger unit.

Good to know the unit. Post it once you find it and maybe will start a thread on those rare pics we all have.

The early way of mounting the volunteer shields should be on the
left
sleeve, halfway between the shoulder seam and the elbow, and 1.5cm above the sleeve eagle if it's SS.... sometime mid-war, they changed this and started mounting them on the lower sleeve (halfway).
I am pretty sure that the skull designs came from the Light Units... one of those is reenacted:
