How do I Join?
If what is outlined in this website appeals to you, and you can meet the unit’s requirements, please fill out our online membership application and we will get right back to you. Once we have been accepted as a probationary member, detailed information about the unit and a vendors guide will be sent to you.
Also, after you sign up, a unit sponsor will be assigned to you and, along with the unit leaders, will guide you through the processes of becoming a Roman reenactor -- and a participant in a truly unique experience in a unique hobby. New members will start as a miles gregarius (regular soldier), and only become full-fledged miles gregarius when they have assembled their kit and show that they can work safely and reliably within our organization.
All members are assigned to or volunteer for specific jobs within our unit impression. Most clothing and kit is the private property of each individual. We encourage new members to purchase their kit as quickly as their financial resources permit, although we realize that there can be a major financial investment to start out and that it may take some time. On the other hand, some of the most convincing parts of the best impressions cost almost nothing but require some hard work: use of the Latin language and learning a bit of drill and cutoms to name some.
So, if you have a genuine interest in entering this hobby yourself, we would like to talk to you!

Becoming a Roman Soldier of Legio IX Hispana
You can participate in Legio IX Hispana as either a miles gregarius (regular soldier) or as an auxilia (auxillary soldier), but in order to become a Roman Soldier of Legio IX Hispana, to be part of what we do, you must:
- Be able to make or acquire, wear and use the gear and equipment of a Roman Soldier;
- Have the time and resources to be a participant;
- Have a strong desire to be part of what we are trying to accomplish.
A soldier is known as a miles gregarius (mee-lace gray-gaar-eeeus). Plural is milites (mee-lee-tays) gregarii (gray-gaar-eee). All milites gregarii are classified into three groups:
- miles probatus -- new recruit
- miles gregarius -- soldier
- miles gregarius superus -- senior soldier
About the miles
Your ultimate goal as a soldier participant of LEGIO IX, is to become a miles gregarius superus (a full-fledged Roman Soldier; this is a term LEG. IX coined for this level of membership). First though, you must go through a few steps. To do this you need to acquire the
“A-List” (or minimum kit for participation). Upon attaining that goal, you will be known as a miles probatus. Your next goal is to acquire the Basic Kit. During this time you are expected to learn the Commands, the Basic Skills and the Traditions of Legio IX Hispana.
Once you have a achieved a basic level of participation, usually a year after acquisition of the complete Basic Kit, your status as miles probatus will be reviewed by the senior Centurio of Legio IX Hispana. You will present yourself for a formal inspection and review at which time you may be asked questions and perform skill tasks pertinent to good Roman soldiery and Legio IX Hispana. A favorable review will result in promotion to miles gregarius.
