Question regarding Western Confederate jackets

I'm relatively new to reenacting, and have a couple of questions about jackets in the western (Army of Tennessee) theater.  First, how common was jean wool?  Was it much more common than "regular" wool?  Also, in trying to develop a somewhat generic impression (2nd KY Infantry, Orphan Brigade) would a plain, nondescript shell jacket be more "versatile" than, say, a commutation jacket or Columbus Depot jacket?
