Title: if you are joining - where are you ?
Post by: Balaklava on February 12, 2012, 11:28:58 AM
For a while I was seeing so many new members joining this site. Many joining each day. If you are joining - where are you ? In discussions ? In reenacting ? Bettering the hobby ? What am I missing ? People join and that's it ? ? ?

Sincerely your only Crimean War period reenactor,
Johnnie, 93rd Sutherland Highlanders 1812-1858.

I agree. It seems that there are not many of us here, that are willing to discuss events, units or even the hobby.
I have been on and off for the past two years, but I do stop in and add some comments here and there.
I am interested to know where the hobby is heading with all these discussion about parks shutting out reenactors and events.
Are we becoming a dying breed?
I hope not. Maybe we just need to boost our recruiting efforts and get further involved in the schools, and even I dare say, the social networks.
Let's hope that something will change sson.

I'm sure you are right. I log in maybe once a week, work is busy, maybe a little less than that. Many things change over time - yes, even reenacting. Surely there is interest in the hobby. 2400 members here & it seems like only a couple dozen regulars. I do see here at R.net there is a huge diversity in people doing different time periods / impressions. That is a good thing. I was of the opinion recently that with the 150 year anniversary of the US Civil War and the 200 year anniversary of the War of 1812 there would be more interest / chatter. Remains to be seen...

Cheers, Johnnie, 93rd Highlanders 1812-1858.

Unfortuantely, a lot of the new accounts appear to be "throwaway" accounts.  >:(

Perhaps, my opinion is that this is a great place to find info & contact people in all time periods in the reenacting hobby. There should definately be a way to limit membership to one person per screen name. Other sites have had to delete guys who have 4 or 5 screen names - multi memberships. This leads to someone in one instance having started a thread and answering hisself on & on to the point of having an arguement with hisself and using some pretty profane lauguage on the site and the mods looked it up and found the guy had multi memberships and just deleted him. Weird, is all I can say. This does nothing for the hobby if it is happening here .....

BTW, 2nd Cav .... my greatgrand pappy was a 1st Lt. in 2nd US Cav in 1861-65, stationed around Fort Smith / Hot Springs Arkansas area. Some of a narrative he wrote tells a bit about his service on the border fighting Confederate irregular cavalry.

Cool! :-)

Yeah, that sure sounds like a bizarre scenario but I believe it. :-) Wish there was a way to block IP numbers, I think that would stop that sort of thing.

Well, for starters what period are you looking to reenact? Depending on the period, there may be groups in your area but it all depends.  ;)

OK, looks like WWII then. There appears to be two WWII reenacting organizations out your way:

http://www.nwha.org/

http://www.pnwhg.com/qa.html

Depending on what side you wish to portray, this may do it. You may also have to do some Google searching. Also, a lot of the people up there also travel for bigger events in California.

Good luck!

That's good advice youre getting. Travel is a big part of reenacting unless they is a huge glut of groups / events real close to you in your home area. I suggest if there is a multi period military timeline type event, that may have time periods represented from perhaps the 2nd century to modern times, and this is an easy day trip then you get to see what others do - and don't do - and speak with those already doing the reenacting / living history hobby.

Nothing is stopping you from developing your own unit, I / we certainly encourage you to develope a researched impression. If you want great results - research, research, research .... a lot of research is free online - and learn to observe safety with firearms. Even blank loaded WW2 weapons can cripple you.

Wishing you all the very best in your endeavors,
Cheers, Johnnie, 93rd Highlanders 1812-1858.
