At least, this is what I have been asked.....
Why is henna so popular?
Having 3 tattoos myself, I can tell you.... no pain! And, it's temporary, so your significant other's name doesn't stay with you forever. ; ) It's a beautiful method of expression, the lacy, intricate Indian patterns are breathtaking.
How long will my henna tattoo last?
Usually 1 to 4 weeks, there are lots of factors. The main ones being skin type & and on what part of the body your tattoo is on. If you are fair-skinned, generally the henna will stain will be darker. If your tattoo is on your hands, or on the shoulder you wear you backpack on, it will be washed or rubbed off quicker. Thicker skin, like hands and feet, tend to dye darker and last longer. If you wash a lot of dishes.... wear rubber gloves.
Is it safe?
Henna has been used safely for 5000 + years. As with any cosmetic product, if you are unsure about sensitivity or allergenic reactions to henna or mehndi oil (a blend of eucalyptus, clove & essential oils) request a test spot to watch for any reaction. How do I make my henna tattoo last longer?
You can ensure the longest lifespan for your henna tattoo by preparing & looking after your skin. Exfoliating the design area the day before you receive your tattoo removes all the dead skin cells on the surface of you skin. This ensures that you get a good "fix." If you forget to exfoliate, the design will fade as soon as it is washed. Moisturizing your tattoo no more than twice a day will slow your skin's natural exfoliation & regeneration process, making your design last longer. Make sure your moisturizer is totally absorbed before covering your design with clothing.
Can I swim or use a sauna?
Swimming will shorten the lifespan of your tattoo. Apply a waterproof suntan cream to limit fading. Saunas and steamrooms are not reccomended as they speed up the skin's regeneration process.
