The history & origin of henna and its uses are hard to track. With centuries of migration & cultural interaction, it is difficult to determine where particular traditions began. There is some historical evidence that henna, used in ceremonial art form known as mehndi, had its origins in ancient India. Henna has been used for at least 5000 years as a cosmetic and for its natural healing properties.
The art form of mehndi varies from region to region, with designs meaning different things to each culture, such as good health, fertility, wisdom & spiritual enlightenment. Traditionally, henna is used to decorate the hands & feet for ceremonial & celebrational occasions, so it has assumed an essential role in most Eastern households. It's application has no class boundaries; the majority of women in all regions have henna applied at least twice a year, whether they are princesses or housewives.
